With the rise of social media use, mental health concerns and their severity have come to the forefront. Most of the media showcase famous personalities and their struggles with depression and anxiety only after it’s too late. Most recently, Anthony Bourdain took his own life. He is just one of many who have been dealing with mental health for a very long time.
Chester Bennington
Chester Bennington of Linkin Park
I’ve been a fan of Linkin Park for a very long time. Last year on July 20, the lead singer, Chester Bennington, also fell victim to long-time depression and took his own life. I have a picture of me with him at a benefit concert from a few years ago. As you can see, he had a huge smile and was great with the fans. Not many people could see his struggles.
Mental health had not been taken seriously by the general population until recently and even then, it’s not the most widely accepted issue. Hopefully, with the support of those who publicly suffer from mental health issues, those who are suffering in private can find help.
What is Depression?
There are some differences between the forms of depression. Major Depression is characterized by the following:
- fatigue
- feelings of worthlessness/guilt
- impaired concentration
- insomnia, disinterest in activities
- recurring thoughts of death or suicide
- significant weight loss or gain
Other forms such as Persistent Depressive Disorder, Bipolar / Manic Depression, and Treatment-Resistant Depression share many of the same symptoms with some particular differences.
Other mental health conditions that have become more widely known are Anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
What can I do to fight depression?
The struggle to attain proper mental health is difficult. It should be a multi-faceted approach. Find a therapist who understands your concern. Also find a supporting environment, whether it be friends, family, or a support group.
Another key strategy point is keeping the body healthy as well. Therapists often prescribe exercise for those suffering from depression and anxiety. Exercise promotes proper brain chemical balance. This in conjunction with a proper diet can help the body balance out the mind.
Mental Health and Upper Cervical Chiropractic
In our clinic, we see many people struggle with depression and anxiety. One of the common symptoms across these patients is chronic pain. This pain is what leads to depressive episodes and poor mental health. Physical pain can rewire the brain. Pain, whether it be physical or mental can affect mood. This mood can also cause pain, thus creating a vicious cycle. Being in constant pain prevents the brain from focusing on anything else. That pain can take over a person’s whole life.
Addressing that pain can be a powerful first step in coping with the mental anguish as well. By fixing that pain naturally, a person can rewire themselves to begin to break the cycle.
One way to naturally treat chronic pain syndromes is by finding the cause of the pain. Pain is a signal that something isn’t working properly in the body. When the nervous system can’t cope, then the result is pain.
By looking at the upper cervical spine and brainstem, Upper Cervical doctors can find the cause of the pain and fix it specifically. Fixing a misalignment in the spine and subsequently releasing pressure off the brainstem can begin the path to overall health. You can read about how an upper cervical misalignment can change the brain in cases of concussions.

Don’t suffer in silence anymore. No one should suffer pain, either physical or mental.
